Community Action Partnership of Cambria County
Drug and Alcohol Prevention

As one of four Prevention providers in the county, we provide a number of federal services in the categories of information distribution, education, referral services, and community-based, environmental and alternative activities.    The most intensive services are provided under alternative activites.  Our summer day camp (Summer Youth Program), Youth Awareness Program (YAP), and Families United Network (FUN) programs fit into this category.

The Summer Youth Program (SYP) is for students identified as in need of remediation by the school system.  Two four week sessions are completed by students age 9-12.  Students are bussed from downtown locations to Camp Allegheny in Stoystown, PA.  They spend half of the day in the classroom with certified teachers reviewing appropriate skills, and the other half a day outdoors with recreation counselors.

The Youth Awareness Program (YAP) is a six week early intervention drug education program for adolescents who may have begun experimenting with drugs but who have not been referred for treatment.  Referral sources include schools, juvenile probation, the Cambria County SCA, parents, or others with concern for a child.  The Drug Prevention office is conducting YAP for Cambria County youth outside the Greater Johnstown area.

The Families United Network (FUN) Youth Drug Prevention Program is a 13 week program for youth ages 9-13 consisting of weekly drug education training, alternative activities, field trips, and community service.  Since 1990, over 300 Cambria County youth have graduated from FUN and become peer leaders for prevention.

In addition to the programs above, the Drug Prevention Office provides drug education presentations for all age groups, from preschool to senior citizens.  The presentation topic and length depends upon the needs of the target audience - from churches to schools, from parents to community organizations.   This service, along with Drug Free Workplace Training, intended to establish a Drug-Free Workplace in compliance with the 1998 federal law for businesses and agencies, the Drug Prevention Office is dedicated to the education of individuals and groups about the risks associated with drug use.
